Professor Dr. Andreas Loeschel

Holds the Chair for Microeconomics, in particular Energy and Resource Economics, and is director of the Center of Applied Economic Research at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. Since 2011 he has been chairman of the expert commission on the Federal Government's "Energy of the Future" monitoring process and has headed the Smart Energy Virtual Institute in North Rhine-Westphalia since 2017. He is a lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for the Fifth and Sixth Assessment Report (2010-2014, 2017 - 2021). He is also a member of the working group on ecological issues of the German Bishops' Conference (since 2013) and a member of the Scientific Commission of Lower Saxony (since 2017). He is a co-director of the Australia-Germany Energy Transition Research Hub since 2017. Andreas Löschel is a member of the German National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) and the Senate of the University of Münster.
 
Before accepting the position at the University of Münster, Andreas Loeschel had been Professor of Economics at the University of Heidelberg (since 2010). Prior to that, he was employed at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim (from 1999), where he headed the research department "Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management" from 2007 to 2014 and has been a Research Associate of the ZEW since then. From 2005-2007 he worked for the European Commission at the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) in Seville, Spain. He was a visiting researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (2003), Stanford University (2005), Australian National University (2010, 2011), Tsinghua University Beijing (2013) and Oxford University (2017) and a visiting professor at the Universidad Pablo de Olavide, Sevilla (2006-2007). He is Research Associate of Economics for Energy in Madrid, Advisor to Aurora Energy Research Limited, Fellow of the CESifo Network, Research Fellow of the Australian National University in Canberra and Visiting Chair Professor at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing.
 
Andreas Loeschel studied economics at the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (Diplom-Volkswirt), the University of California, Los Angeles, and Wayne State University in Detroit (MA Economics). He received his PhD at the University of Mannheim in 2003 with a thesis on the economic effects of climate policy measures and was habilitated at the University of Oldenburg in 2009 (venia legendi für Volkswirtschaftslehre). He has received various scholarships (DFG Phd Scholarship, DAAD, Thyssen Stiftung) and prizes (University of Erlangen-Nuremberg for Diploma, University of Mannheim for Phd thesis, German Study Prize of the Körber Foundation) for his research.
 
Professor Loeschel has advised the European Commission, the European Parliament, the OECD, the World Bank and federal and state ministries on economic policy issues in the field of environmental economics, especially in energy and climate policy. He has played a major role in the impact assessments of the EU Commission's 2020 Climate and Energy Package or the 2030 Climate and Energy Framework. He is a member of the board of trustees of the Academy project "Energy Systems of the Future" of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Union of German Academies of Sciences and Acatech. He was a member of the European Union delegation to the Climate Conference in Bali (2007) and of the German delegation to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in London (MEPC 64, 2012). He has been a member of the Committee for Environmental and Resource Economics of the German Economic Association since 2006.
 
His research interests include international environmental economics, in particular energy economics and the economics of climate change, experimental economic research and quantitative impact assessment of regulatory interventions using simulation models. He has written articles in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Financial Times Deutschland, Handelsblatt and Süddeutsche Zeitung and has given interviews in Heute Journal, Heute Plus, Tagesschau, Tagesthemen, Plusminus, Report, Nano, RTL Aktuell, New York Times and various radio programmes.  He is co-editor of the journal Resource and Energy Economics and a member of the editorial board of the journals Climate Policy, Energy Journal and Economics. He has also edited special editions of Applied Energy, China Economic Review, Economica, Energy Policy, Energy Economics and Resource and Energy Economics. Andreas Löschel has published more than sixty articles in journals of the Social Sciences Citation Index, including Applied Economics, Ecological Economics, Economica, Economics Letters, Energy Economics, Environmental and Resource Economics, European Economic Review, Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Journal of Public Economics, Nature Geoscience, Nature Climate Change and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). In the Handelsblatt economist ranking, he was among the top 100 researchers in current research performance (2017). In the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (F.A.Z.) economist ranking he was several timesamong the 50 most influential economists in Germany.
